The IFMA was formed in May 1980 in the United States of America to establish the National Facility Management Association (NFMA). A year later, this organization became the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) to allow access to Canada. This move resulted in the dynamic growth of this association. Europe did not encounter the term facility management until the early 1990s (EuroFM). Among the first countries to notice this field were the United Kingdom, the Scandinavian countries, France and Benelux. Five years later, the field spread to the German-speaking countries.
